Think and Grow Rich is a classic, originally written in 1937 by Napoleon Hill. The author builds on the New Thought philosophy (Charles Haanel, Emma Hopkins, et al) and targets prosperity: specifically financial supply. I know that it’s not spiritually evolved to talk about desiring m-o-n-e-y, and I truly believe that one can be abundant even in its absence, but there are few among us who wouldn’t mind having more than our current supply. And although the wisdom is perennial and applies to all aspects of life, the bottom line is that this Think and Grow Rich Success Journal is a practical workbook to changing our internal thoughts in order to effect financial success in the world.

I personally ascribe to new thought philosophies, however I had never read Hill’s classic—no doubt due, in part, to the shadow of disregard and destruction that greed has wreaked on our planet and mindsets. Still, when I received not one but three of these classic companion books, I knew it was time. The Napoleon Hill formula for success has six distinct steps are establish the foundation: 1) State the exact amount of money you desire; 2) Determine exactly what you intend to give in return; 3) Establish a definite date when you intend to possess the money…etc (read the book!).

Simply deciding on number one, how much money I desire, was an eye-opening exercise. It evoked serious soul-searching and surprise at how little I valued myself. Sure, I could say I want one hundred million dollars, and by next year, but the next step, “exactly what I intend to give in return” brought my daydreaming back into the pragmatic. I won’t bore you with the minutia of my own process, but the point I am making is that there is a big difference between philosophy and application. And financial success requires both. The truth of the “law of attraction” (your thoughts/beliefs/actions determine your experience), although highly adulterated for commercial purposes, is self-evident. Once we transform our thoughts, our words and action will follow. The principle and how it occurs, like the law of gravity, is straightforward and immutable. It’s always our choice to work with it, or to ignore or fight it. With the Think and Grow Rich Success Journal, you get to work with it.

Tarcher/Penguin has now launched a complete companion works to the original Think and Grow Rich, including this Success Journal, Think and Grow Rich Every Day, How to Be Rich (a collection of wisdom from “the world’s greatest wealth builders”) and others. Founded in 1936, Penguin achieved its initial success by publishing high quality paperbacks at a low cost, with color schemes to denote genre, and clearly this continues to be a successful formula. The timing of this current release appealing to success is equally strategic and savvy.

I also highly recommend reading The Instant Millionaire (1993), by Mark Fisher, a simplistic but effective “tale of wisdom and wealth” that presents the same principles in story form.
